The hard-water outlier in our patch. West Wirral — Hoylake, West Kirby, Caldy, Heswall and Meols (CH47, CH48, CH60) — sits at around 283 mg/l calcium carbonate. Genuinely hard, with real limescale, real taste, and a 2024 supply change most installers don't know about.
What's actually in west Wirral water
The mains supply for Hoylake, West Kirby, Caldy, Heswall and Meols comes from a blend of the River Dee and local groundwater boreholes, delivered by United Utilities. That blend is genuinely hard — around 283 mg/l calcium carbonate (Clark scale 19.81), with calcium at 87.5 mg/l. By the Water UK classification, that's hard to very hard.
This makes west Wirral unusual. Most of Merseyside is soft. Most of Cheshire is soft to moderately soft. West Wirral isn't.
And if you've lived in Hoylake since before 2024, you may have noticed your water tasting different. That's not your imagination. In 2024, United Utilities changed the supply source for Hoylake and parts of Wirral. The previous supply was moderately soft to moderately hard; the new blend pushed it materially harder — kettles scaling faster, water tasting different, more visible residue on taps and shower screens.
What this means for filtration on your property:
- Limescale is a real, ongoing problem. Kettle scaling, boiler efficiency loss, shower screen residue, washing machine scale build-up. A whole-house system with hard-water specification handles this. A 3-stage soft-water spec doesn't.
- Chlorine + taste from the river blend. The River Dee component is chlorinated surface water, which carries the same disinfection by-products as Chester. Polishing this out is straightforward but worth doing.
- Old internal pipework. Hoylake, Caldy and West Kirby Old Village have substantial Victorian and Edwardian housing — original lead or galvanised internal pipes still exist behind those period features. The mains test clean for lead (under 1.4 µg/l at the works against a UK limit of 10). The risk is the home's own plumbing.
The picture for west Wirral isn't "you might benefit from filtration." It's "your water actively needs softening and filtration, and the specification matters."
